COMPASS Pathways plc is a mental health care company dedicated to accelerating patient access to evidence-based innovation in mental health (https://compasspathways.com/).

Our first major initiative is developing psilocybin therapy for patients with treatment-resistant depression, using our COMP360 psilocybin in conjunction with psychological support; we are in the final stages of a large-scale, international phase IIb clinical trial. At the same time, our Preclinical team is busy building a comprehensive R&D portfolio with new compounds and indications, focused on our Discovery Center in the US, and in collaboration with partners all over the world.

We currently have an open position in the R&D team for a Director – Medicinal Chemistry and Preformulation.

Location: The role can be based in the United Kingdom, the United States or Germany and may require international travel. 

Reports to: The candidate will report to the Vice President – Preclinical Research.

Roles and responsibilities:

Main responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Scientific oversight of the medicinal chemistry and preformulation aspects of a growing early stage portfolio, potentially including scientific leadership of discovery projects
  • Key scientific driver of ongoing portfolio build
  • Collaboration with and oversight of external discovery chemists and consultants working on small molecule efforts
  • Expert input into small molecule novel target initiatives, including literature/patent searches and patent authoring
  • Design & execution of medicinal chemistry and preformulation studies, including initiation of contract implementation, protocol development, and timeline optimization with Contract Research Organisations
  • Provision of high quality scientific advice, including risk mitigation, resolution of study challenges and interpretation of medicinal chemistry and preformulation datasets across all stages of drug development
  • Strategic input and expert advisor for external small molecule Due Diligence exercises with the Business Development function
  • Broader interaction with R&D team (ADME/Tox, Manufacturing and Quality) to provide expert input when required

Please note: responsibilities do not involve running any experiments/wet lab benchwork.


  • PhD in medicinal or organic chemistry, pharmacology or related subject
  • Industry experience of characterising and optimising drug-like properties of small molecules
  • Track record of application of ligand-based and structure-based design approaches in early stage drug discovery
  • Experience of conducting preformulations work in the context of oral and non-oral routes of administration preferred
  • Experience of working in a virtual and/or globally distributed research environment preferred
  • Experience of working within the context of Controlled Drugs legislation preferable
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and oral)
  • Ability to work both in collaboration and independently, in a cross-functional team
